No School, No work :)

No School, No work :)

There was no school or work today for anyone in Taipei :). There is also no school or work for anyone tomorrow too~!! This does not mean the city is shutdown, as several places I went to today were open, including the giant supermakret chains (Carrefour, french Loblaws/Costco/Dominon knockoff). Due to the typhoon(s) (two actually) that hit Taipei yesterday night, and continuing today and tomorrow its basically a holiday for everyone! :D :D :D

I don't know what the big deal is, the weather is still very warm (mid 30s), sure its windy and raining, but would you want it to be mid 30s and not have any rain or windy to keep you cool? In Toronto we would have -20 weather, severe snow storms and still everyone would have to go to work, and clean the snow off our cars. The rain here just flows into the gutters and doesnt leave the hassle snow and ice does. It was quite windy today, half of my umbrella was bent from the force of the winds. I wonder what would happen if it snowed even once as it does in Toronto here, it would probably shut down the city for years. I was told that last year the subway was shut down for almost a year due to the flooding that occurred from one particularly bad typhoon, entire cars were submerged in water, and the streets were 5 feet deep in rain water. I stayed in-doors for most of the day, and indoors you really cant tell the city is shut down, as the storm is surprisingly quite quiet, there is no thunder or lightning that one would expect of a severely bad rain storm, although its not raining at the moment too badly, although at times it can come down in large heavy sheets. When the windy is really strong, the rain never actually hits the ground, but just gets swept back into the sky, which is pretty neat. I am sure Vancouver gets rain quite often too, but they don't seem to gripe about it as much. I'm not complaining though, a holiday is a holiday :).

With August almost over, hopefully so will be the sweltering heat that has griped Taipei for the last 2 months. In other news, recently I used these weird electronic toilets that spray water to wash your butt while you use them, and the seat is also heated. That was an interesting experience.... but frankly I prefer the N. American style ones over these ones as well. I;m really staring to miss things I took for granted in Canada, like large parks and forrests, clean fresh air, big houses, good pizza and deodorant sticks. Yes, the Chinese deodorant sticks suck, the really dont do a good job, and unfortuantely they dont sell the American brands like Old Spice High Endurance Fresh Scent :( so naturally, if you are planning on coming to Taipei, don't forget to bring some for me :P

Thick crust pizza with extra tomato sauce from Pizza Pizza would also be greatly appreciated if you can fit it on the plane :) Being on a chinese diet. I don't eat much cheese anymore, my friends tell me Chinese people don't like cheese, how it tastes and smells, similar to how N. Americans don't like how Stinky Tofu smells and tastes. Which I find odd considering how many different types of cheeses there are out there, but there maybe some truth to this as I rarely see any cheese here in any of the foods, granted most stores sell Congee, steamed dumplings, Fried meat or vegetables, rice or noodles, food that generally does not have cheese served with it. There are McDonalds, KFC and Burger Kings here, but like their Canadian equivalents, I never patronize these places.

In order to keep my english skills intact, I am going to try to find some libraries or bookstores that carry english titles, although that has previously proved to be quite challenging. I will report later how successful I am at this endevour.

August almost over...

August has been a very hot month to say the least. Yet, when I went out last night after the rain, it was quite nice, with a cool breeze. Strangely, my street actually smelled nice for once, as usually it smells like a public bathroom, although to be fair all of Taipei smells like that :) MY street smells nice though because of these two trees that are blooming flowers, helps make the place smell better I guess.

Not much else to report, not learning much in my Mandarin lessons, I keep getting the tones wrong...and am shocked by how much fruits cost here, its odd considering its a tropical country how much fruit and fruit juices cost. You can go to the store and actually buy fruit in these gift boxes, because they cost so much, people can give each other boxes of fruit. I would imagine it odd to wrap a box of fruit to give to someone else for their birthday LOL.

Tomorrow is Chinese Valentine's Day, here they have it twice a year, the Western Feb. 14th date and another one for tomorrow (Sunday) August 22.

Taiwan's Libraries

Taiwanese Libraries...
OK, the past weekend I just visited supposedly the biggest library in Taiwan, it houses fiction, non-fiction and everything in between. The ghetto thing was that all the fiction books were only in chinese, as well as most of the non-fiction ones. Another issue was to enter the library, you needed to swipe in a card, even someone like me needed to swipe a visitor card issued to be after registering. Apparently, they don't want strangers visiting the library, as they may try to steal books. In addition, no one was allowed to bring in any bags, such as a knapsack, anything larger than a purse had to be put in a locker as there was a fear ppl would use them to smuggle books out of the library.

Now, I know Toronto has its own share of library book thieves, but I am so grateful we don't have to resort to these Draconian measures. The library was quite large, but probably not bigger than U of T or Metro Toronto Reference Library.

Did I mention how hot it still is in Taiwan? We did have some rain recently, but for some reason it was still hot even while it was raining.

In short, I would just like to add I am very dissapointed with the libraries in Taiwan....

Updated pics

I got my camera working, I just washed it lightly, and jiggled da cable when inserting it, and now I can download pics to my computer.

I have updated pics from my trip to the National Palace Museum, as well as more food and street pics of Taipei. Defenitely check out the updates and I think they are worth the bandwidth :)

I have been sooo busy lately, but I think a typhoon will hit tomorrow so I won't have to work tomorrow :)

Taipei still very hot.... my chinese lessons are going alright, although I think I have not made too much progress lately... nothing much else to report, although I did try out Doom 3 -> what a great game :)

9-6 and Capone's...

Ok, did anyone know that in Taiwan ppl work 9-6?! When I saw
my friends working until 6, I just thought they must really
like their job...but apparently here the normal working hours
is 9-6, and some places you have to work everyother Saturday
as well half the day. Thats pretty crazy, but explains why
rush hour here is a bit later than in Toronto. It also
explains why Asia is so much more productive, so many ppl
working an extra hour of the day, multiply by all the ppl here
and you have a LOT of productivity.

I went to this fancy restaurant called Capone's, its right
beside the MRT subway station and was really nice. The food
was very tasty (although it did not taste anything like what
it was suppose to be), and the decor was great. Basically it
is an American joint, complete with tons of Gangster posters
and brick walls, an area with live music and really beautiful
lighting. The place is kind of expensive ($20/person) and the
food doesn't taste like it should, for example the Tiramisu
doesnt look or taste like Tiramisu (basically whats served is
a white cake drenched in a rich cream sauce and some coffee
shavings on top, how it resembles Tiramisu? no clue...). Yet,
i find that its very common here, no matter how good the
restaurant is, the food may look or simulate international
cuisine, but it really can't match Toronto's restuarants,
although I admit the chinese food here is fabulous :) That
restaurant I guess was really high end though, I took 1-2 pics
of the food though, once I get the camera xD reader I will
update my gallery.

I went to the Nat. Palace Museum again, and this time took
tons of pics :) I will also try to update/upload those ASAP
on the website. Teaching is keeping me really really busy, so
won't have much time to keep posting, barely spend any time at
home, basically just for sleeping :) With teaching english and learning chinese, basically no time to spend @ home...

Did I mention its still very hot here? Not that the bugs seem
to mind, they luv the heat :'( My computer is the exact
opposite though, it crashes and overheats quite a bit when
playing games... I will upgrade the cooling system, get some
memory heatsinks for my video card, Doom3 is taxing my video
card like mad, wow what a great game, ya another reason why I haven't been getting much sleep lately. =)
