Frogs, Mosquitoes, and other wildlife

Lately, I have had trouble sleeping. Around 1 a.m. about 40 frogs outside my window will start ribbiting or making that sort of sound. Its not a constant noise either, it goes in waves, like a crescendo of music, following a random pattern. They get scared when a scooter or car comes by, and the air is filled with an eerie silence. Than one of them performs an introductory ribbit to test for danger. Thereafter the initial ribbit, the others will join in, I wonder if its mating season or something, but its really annoying. The fact that its not a constant noise, but something constantly changing can be quite frustrating. It kinda sounds like hands clapping, so every 30s, when they pause, I pretend I am making a speech, to which they will subsequently be clapping at, like supporters at a political rally.

The mosquitoes are getting very smart now. I can no longer find them in the room to kill, they have found some excellent hiding places, perhaps behind the closet or bookshelves. They come at night when I sleep, before they used to come as soon as I turned off the lights. Obviously I would hear them coming and quickly turn on the lights and smite them down with Zeus' fury (and my trusty mosquito zapper). Now they have become smarter, they wait 15-20mins until the lights close (persumably till I fall asleep). I was fooled once, but hence forth I stayed awake waiting for them (easier since the frogs keep me up, perhaps trying to warn me?) and swat them away when I hear them coming. Unfortunately, now they have become too smart. Recently, I waited an hour and went to bed at 1:30 a.m. I was woken up 3 hours later at 4:30 a.m. by the buzzing of a lone mosquito bent on a late night snack. He had bitten my hand already before I had the chance to come out of my deep slumber. I quickly flicked on the lights and terminated him with my zapper. Pissed I stayed up another 30 mins (till 5:15 a.m.) waiting to see if any more were left in the room. The room was clear and I resumed my sleep. Unfortunately, I cannot keep guard the entire night waiting for them to come for our duel. I have decided to give in and get the chemical repellants, as much as I abhor their potential side-effects. Peter suggested one he uses that you plug-in, and it burns this tablet and repels mosquiteos from your room. I have been using it the last 2 days and its been quite good, completely odourless and my room mosquito free. I am not sure if its the tablet or because I have been more vigilant about keeping my doors and windows tightly sealed. My window screen is in good condition, so how these carnivores get into my apartment is a mystery.

I guess an easier solution might be to just take one of the frogs from downstairs and put them in my apartment, but I really dont have time for a pet, and honestly, dont think I have that many bugs that would warrant a reptile, nor enough space for one to be hopping around. I wonder if they could take care of my ant problem as well though? um....than it may just be worth considering...

Can't we all just Get Along?

The insects here are insane, they keep fighting with me, and dying by the 100s. When its not the mosquitoes, its the ants or fruit flies or fleas. Yes thats right fleas, I think they are hiding somewhere in my apartment because I've been finding little bites on myself :( I am starting to miss the winter, if you could call it a winter. Somehow compared to Canada, 5-15 degrees doesn't exactly seem like a harsh winter, more like a sweet Fall :) The bugs here are odd, even without food they will still swarm all over the place searching or just hiding from the outside environment, perhaps its the humidity, but I found Canada to be far far cleaner.

I am pretty sure this country has almost no labour laws and no union groups, as construction workers here work pretty much 24/7. I don't mean in a business neighbourhood either, but in residential areas. Outside my window there is a giant construction vehicle digging holes and bashing stuff at 7 a.m. The other night I was woken at 5 a.m. because outside my window people were using jackhammers, chainsaws and drills. Its hard to describe how close these ppl are to my apartment, so I took some pics this morning, will post when I get home. Someone is building another apartment building right next to mine, so its also pretty dangerous walking in the small road from my apartment to the main street. There's large construction machinery on the road with no police to direct traffic around it. In fact, I don't think I have ever seen police directing traffic, only giving speeding tickets. Actually, sorry not quite true, the downtown core has an area of businesses catering to Foreigners, where conscripts direct traffic. Some of them might even be police, but in most cases just kids who are forced to join the army due to conscription do the menial cheap civil tasks, as it saves the government a lot of money :)

We haven’t had any major earthquakes lately, so I guess that’s one thing I should be grateful for. Although truthfully, considering the lame architecture of Taiwan, lack of a destructive earthquake would not necessarily be a good thing. The city could really use a change, the houses are too closely grouped together, and there was no residential planning or zoning between commercial buildings, schools and homes.

I guess I have really settled in here quite well, besides the political mess and horrid pollution and lax safety concerns the place is quite nice :P. I guess my biggest gripe would be the pollution though, its really quite ….breathtaking? LOL.

I'll probably be posting again shortly of the invasion of the mosquitoes, stay tuned.

Using non-OEM cellphone usb data cable

If anyone out there ever has the same problem as me, the below will be a big help.

I bought a DCU-11 data cable for sony ericsson k500i cell phone, but it didn't work because the usb ID given in windows xp was incorrect. U need to use the below info to fix the problem for it to recognize the usb cable.

Thanx goes out to Andy Mortenson :) saved me a lot of headache and pain

Heres the deal. The KQ-ERI cable is I believe a copy. The driver instance ID is different from the SUSTEEN cable. My cable had the ID USB\VID_067b&PID_1234 yet the OEM Sony cable has an ID of USB\VID_0731&PID_0528. To have windows recognize your cable you will need to modify the SUSCOM.INF file.

In the SUSCOM.INF file you will need to change the id to match your cable. (look under the properties of you USB cable and hit details to find you ID if it is different than mine.)

Below is the modified SUSCOM.INF file: (MODIFY YOUR SUSCOM.INF FILE)
